The ruling, incomplete pass. One of several blown big calls by this crew. Yes the guys in the white jerseys recovered what was obviously a "fumble"
The pictures are in sequence. In the second picture you can still clearly see the QB was standing ahead of the line.

Looks like a fumble to me but wouldn't be the worst no call I've seen this year. |

Based on the two pictures, nothing is obvious to me. Not trying to cover this crew's rear...just hard to tell from the pics. The pass to the flat just after the snap is a difficult one. If it is close or the official is not sure, it will always be ruled a forward pass. It appears the wing official on the far side never moved off of the line of scrimmage, not that it would have been his call. Can not tell from the pics the angle the near side wing official had. The extra official in the jacket may have had the best look. |

Look where the yard line is, look where the quarterback is and look where he has the ball in relationship to the yard line. Now look where the ball is as it is coming out of the "receivers" hands. In live action it appeared to be a little closer but still did not look to be a forward pass.
There were a couple of other very obvious misses on this side of the field. One was a reception where the receiver had one foot on the sideline and and the other foot a good couple of feet out of bounds. My camera refused to take a picture of that catch!
One of the funnier/sad ones was a spot. The runner ran to the sideline then cut up field. Now again it looked obvious that he hit the white line. His cut was ~ five yards up field of me. The area within several square yards looked nice and neat except for this nice huge fresh mark on the outside edge of the white line. Outside being field white line sidelines. His mark was on the white line and into the the sidelines. When he made the cut you saw some white grass fly up.:) They gave him progress down field another 10 or so yards.
I am not going to get into holds or other calls. Those many times are very hard to judge. But this pass that should have been a fumble, the "pitch" where it appeared the runner was down, the "catch" on the sideline and the missed out of bounds call all where in the area that the official on the sideline should have seen. I know the job these guys do is tough but to me this was a little excessive in misses by one guy. I really posted these here because every time I've seen you at a game you have been that official. I can say I can only recall one potential call you missed. That was when I was a boxman and an Olympic player got his hands in the facemask of a runner. I forget the team that was against. You didn't throw the flag and I kind of thought you should have. I mentioned it to you after the play. Otherwise you've been spot on for every game I can remember.
I don't think you would have missed all these calls. I know you've had similar situations. All of these are normal things we see many times in the course of one ball game. All except for maybe "the pitch". I don't know if it is because your mechanics are better than this guy or what. And understand these are complaints. In this game it really didn't matter who won. I can honestly say this is one of those games that I got to enjoy and was only "upset" when I saw stupid stuff like this happen. Oh yea, I was upset that the two teams did not shake hands after the game.
SC does the coin flip pre-game with the coaches and not the team captains. I did not realize this. |

In both pictures, you see an official on the far sideline watching the play, not sure how he missed this one. |

ASU, the other official on this side of the field was almost in the same position. I have to give Coach Reedy a lot of credit. The man did not lose it over these calls like I know most coaches would.
ASU you would like Reedy, he coached at Clemson in the 80's. Malcom "Dr. Detroit" Nelson told me so. I mentioned Nelson because he played WR at Clemson in case you know of him. |

ASU, the official on the far sideline was most likely an extra official on hand in case one of the game officials got hurt. He is wearing a jacket, and is not in a professional officiating posture (for lack of better words). He is in a relaxed body posture. |

Dale...I missed a call??? No way! ;-) In live action, and since you were at that angle, it was most likely backwards. Just hard to tell from two pictures from my point of view. I appreciate the kind words though. As I have posted before in other threads, I work very hard on and off the field to be the best official I can and be in the right position to make accurate calls. You must have been nice to me that game when you were on the box. After my box man told me Friday night that I was having a "rough game", I told him that if he wanted to comment on the officiating, he could go in the stands, and the clip man could take his place. The box man didn't have any more comments for the rest of the game. |

In the game I reference it was late and Olympic was up pretty big. You and I had talked a little bit during the game. I think you were more surprised that I pointed out that it should have been a penalty on Olympic. When I worked chains I only talked to officials if they struck up the conversations first. The chain crew that was at the game I was at Friday night. They were vocal in their displeasure of the officials AND Their cheering the home team on. I was very shocked the officials allowed them to do this. Normally officials give a warning about cheering, especially when play is inside the 25. |

The offside wing won't overrule a call like that unless he KNOWS it is forward, and the covering officials rules it backward and a live ball. If the covering official rules it forward and blows it dead, even though it may be backwards, there is nothing the backside official can do to correct the call in HS football. Part of my pre-game instructions to the chain crew every week if that they are part of the official crew, and must act accordingly. THey must act professional, no coaching, and not vociferous cheering. Ataboys are OK, but that is about it. Too bad I will not be giving those instructions again until August... |

Nah...I have a two month old son at home, to go with my 2 1/2 year old girl. Once the season is over, it is over...family time again. |
