Raider Revenge
The Red Raiders clamored for a rematch with Forestview after the Jaguars edged the Raiders 21-20 earlier in the season. And they got their wish and they took advantage. The Jaguars, winners of 10 out of their last 11 home games fall at home for the first time this season, ending their best season ever.
The start of the game showed no indication of what was to come. The Jaguars marched down the field on their second drive and J.V. move-up running-back, Octavius Wallace put the Jaguars on the board with a 35-yard touchdown run. The Jaguars appeared primed to extend their lead after Josh Justice fumbled at the South Point 27-yard line, but the Jaguars failed to convert.
Forestview would stop South Point on the ensuing drive, but Jawan Taylor fumbled the punt return and the Red Raiders were back in business. South Point’s Aaron Crumbley would cap the drive off with a 16-yard touchdown run. Crumbley extended the Red Raiders’ lead to 14-7 with a 10-yard run later in the second quarter.
The Jaguars went back to work on the next drive and capped it off with a Jonathan White 8-yard pass to Joseph Reid. The score was tied 14-14 at half-time.
In the second half, the Red Raiders went on a tear. South Point took the lead with a Josh Justice 13-yard pass to Shane Merrill to take a 21-14 lead. Justice called his own number early in the fourth quarter with a 59-yard run. Crumbley put the nail in the coffin with a 33-yard touchdown run with just five minutes to go in the game. The score was 35-14.
The Jaguars took the ensuing kickoff to the Red Raider 30-yard line, but would not be able to punch in another score. South Point ran the clock out and they advance on to the second round. Crumbley finished the game with 180 yards and three touchdowns.
Kevin Jeter led Forestview’s offense with 95 yards, Octavius Wallace mustered up 77 yards and a touchdown.
“We felt like we weren’t playing with leverage.” South Point head coach John Devine said of the first half performance “We didn’t have our hard parts down. We were sitting back watching and we knew we had to attack the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.”
On the revenge factor Devine commented “That had no effect on it. We just come out and win it one at a time. We’re just going to get better blocking and tackling and being solid in the kicking game. That’s how you win football games.”
“They’re a good team.” Forestview head coach Chris Medlin said about South Point “It’s one of those nights. I’m disappointed. I hate it for our kids.”
For the missed opportunities in the first half, Medlin commented “(Those were) real big. Every possession is big against a good team, every play. We had a great run, but not a good day.”
South Point will advance to the third round to take on Kannapolis A.L. Brown.
