Red Devils Fall To Reidsville in the 2AA State Title

In the battle of the defending state champions, the Red Devils looked nothing like a champion as they fell to Reidsville 28-6. The Red Devils trailed 22-6 at half-time and never could recover. Missed opportunities and key penalties killed Newton-Conover in the first half. Reidsville’s passing attack proved to be too much for Newton-Conover’s defense. Rams quarterback Tyrell Houghton passed for 288 yards and three touchdowns.

Newton-Conover made it inside the Rams’ red zone twice in the first half only to come away with two Spencer Linquist field-goals.

The Red Devils appeared to be up to the task of ending the Rams’ 47 game winning streak on the first drive of the game as they made it near the Rams’ 30-yard line. However, they would turn the ball over on downs.

Reidsville’s Houghton would cap off the following drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Denzell Blackwell. A two-point conversion pass to Lyshod Graves made it 8-0 Reidsville.

The Red Devils drove down the field inside the Rams’ 10-yard line on the following drive, but were stopped and they settled for a Spencer Linquist 20-yard field goal to cut the lead to 8-3. Blackwell widened the gap for the Rams when he recovered a Houghton fumble and ran it in from the six-yard line. The Rams led 14-3. Houghton’s 31-yard touchdown strike to Kenzel Doe gave the Rams a 20-3 lead. Houghton’s run for a two-point conversion made it 22-3.

With the Red Devils desperately needing points before half-time, Spencer Linquist nails a 33-yarder to make the half-time score 22-6.

Reidsville went back to work in the third quarter and the game was slipping further and further away from the Red Devils. Houghton’s 47-yard touchdown pass to Lyshod Graves put the nail in the coffin, giving the Rams a 28-6 lead.

The Red Devils did not allow another score, but their offense was kept in neutral and was shut out in the second half. Reidsville extends their winning streak to 48.
